An episode.

I tied my first fly for salt water fishing when I was just a youngster maybe sixteen years old and concurrent with this I was fortunate enough to have a friend who lived on Block Island, Rhode Island. There, seventeen miles out in the Atlantic is a great place to begin.

One summer day I was told that an accomplished angler, who wrote for a pretty influential magazine, was coming to stay in “the cabin.” I assumed that he was going to have a fancy boat and all the trapping of a big time “salt water” angler. I was dead wrong.

Alston B. had a 16 foot Sears john boat that was covered on the inside with wall to wall carpeting. Pushing the boat was a well used Johnson 15. However in the rear of the Wagoneer he did have trunks of lures and a rod of every caliber that was produced during that time. Alston was a die hard spin fisherman a several rods were well over 14 feet in length and to watch him work the water was mystical. I have to admit that his logical approach to fishing set the stage for my appreciation for a good rod, lure or fly. However, from that day until tomorrow I will retain his deep appreciation for an accurate cast and a believable retrieve. Having the best fly pattern selection just make it a bit easier.
