shop picture interiorMany anglers have come to our shop and find a new place to call home. The next  time you come up to our valley maybe you should  stop in and find out what makes us so popular with anglers from all over the world.

The quick read is simple:
Doc Knoll created a fly shop that in his words, "even he would like to visit."
Doc is  well known in the fly fishing world as the product manufacturer who is a fly shop owner. He is also  widely known  not to be politically correct. It is fortunate for you that when you visit the shop he and his staff will tell you what you need to know and not what you would like to hear. They also  treat all customers as the Knoll's  personal guests while  on the farm.  Yes, the shop is off the beaten path. Doc does not really advertise and he personally does not guide. So what makes this shop so unique?

Products. Doc  has designed  is product line to be the best fishing products available.
But you will have to stop in to see for yourself that this claim is correct.

And.... if you have good angling abilities  he will get you into some very good  fish.

The Fly Shop's Story
The Fly Shop's story is a long one but to condense it into something palatable;  the business is serious about what it does. Doc Knoll started  the business with a flock of Genetic Hackle birds and  with that commitment someone could realize or deduce that he is truly serious about what he does.

When you come up to the shop you can see a few of these birds on display but  because of the birds; the tiers, especially the ones used to tie our flies are world class. One look at our flies and you will see the distinct difference. You will also learn that this is why Knoll's flies are the most used in Yellowstone Country.

Doc carries an extreme amount of flies that are the right size for you to use while in Yellowstone Country. Other patterns or flies of your own invention can be easily made when ordered through our mail service.
Be sure to see Doc's personal flies and is outrageous collection of woven fly patterns.

Fly RodsKnoll's Rods

are purely the best that you will ever cast.
The three principle designs  in the fly rods will suit your every need.

When you stop in just ask to try one out on the casting pond.
The pond is there for you to use. Please, just watch out for the ducks.

    Knoll's Pro Series:
Even Doc says, "the Pro series rod  is not for every angler.

If you are an intermediate caster or less... then stay away from this rod."
A wise lesson that you will never hear spoken  in other "less honorable" shops.

    Knoll's Flex Series:
This a great graphite rod that will not knock you broke.
Many of the Knoll's staff and Pro Staff use this series of rods because of the  abuse  it will take.
It's a very good dry fly rod but its true design was to be a great nymphing rod.

     Knoll's Montana Series:
This is hands down the best intermediate rod available anywhere.
However, even if you have a competitor's top of the line  rod in your trunk you might want to slip a reel onto one of these rods and give it a shake. Many of our rod owners were sorry that our rods were not carried by the shop that sold them some other rod.
After all unlike most any other fly shop,  this is why we have a casting pond on the premise.
We want you to decide with actual proof and not  wishful thinking.

Other Knoll's products will also make you a believer that someone is still out there looking out for your best interest.

If you are new to fly fishing and want a little support to get you started  then you may want to check out the Knoll Fly Fishing School.
This one day course will get you comfortably in the water and catching wild cutthroat trout. Go to the Knoll Fly Fishing School
You will not be sitting around learning knots and other boring things.  Knoll's will answer all the little things that will lead you to being a successful angler.

GUIDES: We believe that all guides are not the same. Therefore, we do not have a list of people who are capable of just rowing you down any river and we would never suggest that river fishing conditions are always good for the person seeking the picture of a lifetime. However, if a guide is desired or truly needed to get you to that special spot then we will be happy to suggest a competent guide to you. All of the recommended guides carry their own Montana outfitting licenses and are independent of this shop. We also have connections to licensed guides that can take you on wade trips or week long pack trips within Yellowstone National  Park.

foggy big hornA Doc Knoll Image

October is a cold month in Montana This image was taken
on the Big Horn River just as the sun rose on the 23rd.
The ambient temperature was 22 degrees.
However, although very early in the morning,
the fish were already taking small midges patterns off the surface of this tail water section.

If you have questions about a specific area to fish in Montana,
Wyoming or within Yellowstone National Park just
write Doc and ask. We're always happy to help a newcomer to the area.
After all, we all were in this same position at one time. DocKnoll@Knolls.us
